Thailand - 5 August 2024


Thailand is due to become the first Southeast Asian state to legalise same-sex marriage after lawmakers passed the final reading of a marriage equality law following more than two decades of civil society campaigning. The Senate upper house approved the bill by a majority of 130 to 4 and 18 abstentions. The International Commission of Jurists (ICJ) highlighted the importance of the bill for advancing human rights in the country and the risks associated with attempts to delay or obstruct the bill’s final stages. The bill will enable same-sex spouses to enjoy equality in rights including child adoption.



Myanmar - 5 August 2024


In Myanmar, recent military operations in Rakhine State have resulted in significant civilian casualties and the widespread destruction of infrastructure. These actions have been widely condemned as violations of international humanitarian law, demanding an immediate cessation of hostilities. Legal experts stress the need for accountability and the protection of civilian lives amidst the conflict.



Venezuela - 5 August 2024


In Venezuela, mass protests erupted as thousands demand the annulment of the recent presidential election results, alleging widespread electoral fraud. The demonstrators are calling for international intervention to ensure electoral integrity. This situation underscores the ongoing political instability and challenges to democratic processes in the country.



Bangladesh - 3 August 2024


Bangladesh continued to witness severe civil unrest with 93 fatalities reported amidst protests demanding the resignation of the Prime Minister. United States - 3 August 2024

Guatemala - 1 August 2024

Central African Republic - 2 August 2024


The UN Security Council has adopted a resolution lifting the arms embargo on the Central African Republic, reflecting progress in the nation’s stabilization efforts.

The arms embargo was adopted by the Council in December 2013 to address violence, human rights violations and the breakdown of law and order within the CAR. This new decision is intended to bolster the country’s security and aid its path towards sustained peace and reportedly marks a significant development in international support for the CAR.

The Supreme Court of Nepal has delivered a landmark ruling affirming the legal recognition of a trans woman as a woman. This decision represents a significant advancement in the rights of transgender individuals within the country. Pakistan - 31 July 2024
