Introduction

Lauren Lederle is an international practitioner with over a decade’s experience advising and representing States, corporations, NGOs, and individuals in complex public international law, international criminal law, and human rights disputes before domestic and international courts and tribunals. She is also building a practice in extradition and domestic crime.

Career & Background

Lauren joins G37 Chambers as a pupil barrister, bringing substantial experience in international law.

Before transferring to the independent Bar, Lauren practised as a Senior Associate at Omnia Strategy LLP, the firm founded and led by Cherie Blair CBE KC. She acted on a range of complex disputes, including high-profile matters, across public international law, international criminal law, and human rights. She appeared in and advised on proceedings before the International Court of Justice, the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea, and regional human rights courts and tribunals. She also took part in a significant investigation into allegations of human rights abuses, which included field deployment in Central Africa. Her practice further encompassed investment arbitration and annulment proceedings for both individuals and States, as well as advising multinational corporations on the implementation of the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights.

Lauren developed a significant practice in human rights litigation and strategic advocacy, with a particular emphasis on transnational repression. She has represented a wide range of clients, including a former Head of State, before UN Special Procedures and the Commission for the Control of INTERPOL’s Files, successfully challenging red notices and pursuing complaints on the right to life, arbitrary detention, judicial independence, and fair trial rights. She has also advocated on behalf of clients before the UN in Geneva and advanced their positions in high-level diplomatic engagement.

In 2024, Lauren undertook a short sabbatical to serve as a pro bono representative of the Association of Defence Counsel before International Criminal Courts and Tribunals (ADC-ICT) at the Guantánamo Military Commissions. She attended pre-trial hearings in the 9/11 case and authored a report, published by the ADC-ICT, evaluating the proceedings against international fair trial standards and the prohibition of torture (available here).

Prior to relocating to London in 2018, Lauren began her career in The Hague, working at the International Centre for Transitional Justice before joining the International Criminal Court as part of the defence team of Charles Blé Goudé in the case against Laurent Gbagbo, the former President of Côte d’Ivoire. She also contributed to the Oxford University Press module on international criminal law.
