Dr Mark Kersten

Introduction

Dr. Mark Kersten is a Senior Consultant at the Wayamo Foundation, senior researcher at the Munk School of Global Affairs at the University of Toronto, and a law student at McGill University, Montreal. In 2011, Dr. Kersten founded the blog Justice in Conflict, which regularly publishes articles on the challenges of pursuing transitional justice in the context of ongoing violent political conflicts.

He has taught courses on genocide studies, the politics of international law, transitional justice, diplomacy, and conflict and peace studies at the London School of Economics, SOAS, and University of Toronto. In 2016, Oxford University Press published Mark’s book, Justice in Conflict: The Effects of the International Criminal Court’s Interventions on Ending Wars and Building Peace.

 He holds a PhD and MSc in International Relations from the London School of Economics and a BA (Hons) in History from the University of Guelph. His research focuses on the politics and effects of interventions by the International Criminal Court (ICC) and has appeared in numerous academic fora as well as in media publications such as The Globe and Mail, Al Jazeera, Foreign Policy, and The Washington Post. Mark has previously been a Research Associate at the Refugee Law Project in Uganda and as a researcher at Justice Africa in London.
